Targeting Educational Advancement for Children
Building Brighter Futures in Muko, Uganda
Our Mission
To empower students in Muko Sub-County through access to quality education, leadership development, and life-changing opportunities—so they can break the cycle of poverty, realize their potential, and create lasting change in their communities.
What We're Doing
1. HONOR Sponsorship
Our HONOR Scholarship (Hope, Opportunity, Need, Ownership, Respect) is a program for young people who have a great desire to learn but lack the financial means to attend school. Through this program, donors provide financial support that allows these students to pursue an education. Our scholarships are a way to lift a child out of poverty and give families hope for the future.
It is hard for many of us in the U.S. to imagine our child not being able to receive an education. But in Muko Sub-County, attending school can be a struggle for many students. All students, in both primary and secondary schools, must pay tuition. Additionally, due to long travel distances and a lack of dependable transportation, many students must live at school, meaning they also need to pay for room and board. This is often far beyond the reach of many families.
We provide need-based scholarships—called HONOR Scholarships—for students who are eager to be in school and serious about their studies. To be considered for a scholarship, students must go through an application process, which is reviewed by a committee. In order to keep the scholarship, students must continue to demonstrate good behavior and steady academic progress.
HONOR Scholarships are funded by donations. The more we raise, the more scholarships we can offer. A gift of $300 covers one year of tuition, room, and board for a student attending Murole Preparatory School or Muko High School.
If you’re interested in helping provide schooling for eager and dedicated students:
$25 per month for one year supports one student
$50 per month supports two students
While monthly commitments help us plan more effectively, one-time donations of any amount are also deeply appreciated. Every dollar helps more students achieve their dreams.
2. Maverick Scholarship
The Maverick Scholarship helps high-achieving students pursue higher education after secondary school. These students are often the first in their families to attend college or university—and they go on to become changemakers in their communities.
These merit-based scholarships were launched in 2015 to cultivate leadership in Uganda. Named in memory of Greg Peterson—whose nickname was “Maverick” for his charismatic, take-charge personality—the scholarship supports promising young leaders in Muko Sub-County through access to higher education.
Applicants are selected for their leadership potential. The hope is that, once educated, these young people will return to their communities to lead and organize for positive change. We believe that through the vision and leadership of one individual, the world can be transformed.
That hope is already being realized. Our very first Maverick Scholar, Judith Tukahirwe, graduated from her nursing program with a degree certificate in midwifery and has joined the ACT staff in Uganda. She now serves as Program Director Manager of our health initiative, HEAL (Health is Elemental to All Life).
Because each student is unique and has different strengths, applicants can choose to attend a vocational school or university of their choice.
Maverick Scholarship costs vary depending on the school and program but generally cover tuition, room, and board. A recommended donation is $50 per month or $600 annually, which enables one student to attend a higher education institution.
